Introducing my first e-book!

In the Spring of 2015, I was approached by a new publishing company out of Canada called Ponies + Horses about writing a personal essay for a compilation called "6 of 1 Travel."  One of the publishers, Aefa Mulholland, was familiar with my work as we had both contributed to the same outlets in the past. I could write about whatever I wanted, she explained, as long as it was a true story and travel-related. The catch was, I had to decide fast if I was in and I would have to turn around my essay in just a few weeks. I said yes.

I've long wanted to write about my years working as an entertainer / Assistant Cruise Director for Princess Cruises in the late 80's and early 90's but how to focus all that time into one essay?  I decided to approach it like a mixtape. I would pick a pop song that takes me pack to a certain experience or person from that time in my life and tell the story that goes with it.

The result is  a mini e-book called  "Mariner's Club Mixtape,"

In Mariner's Club Mixtape, Hollywood writer, performer, filmmaker Dennis Hensley puts together a mixtape that soundtracks a flotilla of romances and relationships, friendships and first times, hookups and letdowns from his five years working as an entertainer on cruise ships in the '80's and '90's. From a one-night stand in Hong Kong to stowing away for love in British Columbia to surviving Alaska, Dennis recounts his adventures, with a little help from George Michael, Janet Jackson and, of course, Madonna.

I was a little raw and vulnerable when I wrote it and that comes out in the text, I think. But I'm really glad that I did it, that I'm now part of the e-book universe and I'm grateful for the opportunity I had to send a literary valentine to the people who made up one of the most formative and exciting times of my life.
